Canadian Club and the Upsides of Prohibition

The original pitch meeting for the series.

The Intoxicologist highlights the best part of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire: the booze. Prohibition was probably the best promotion (and sales tool) that Canadian Club could have imagined. And its effects linger today as CC has become the standard spirit in certain cocktails, not to mention a marketing partner for the series — which might actually be illegal!

In Classic Cocktails, Canadian writer Mark Kingwell had a few suggestions for drinks that celebrate the boozy country up north, such as the Canadian Daisy. Combine 2 oz of whisky, a teaspoon of raspberry syrup, and lemon juice. Stir with ice. Pour into a highball glass, finish off with soda water, and add a float of brandy. Lastly, garnish with raspberries, “or saskatoons for a truly Canadian touch.”

(Don’t worry, I didn’t know what a saskatoon was either. Apparently it looks like a blueberry but tastes a bit like a cranberry. And “saskatoon” is a much better name than its other nickname, the “pigeon berry.”)
